Art and Magic: Hand in Hand
Hello Arachnids!
I want to talk a little about mixing magic and art. This is not a new concept, by any means, but one that I really enjoy. When we create art pieces, we birth a kind of special life into them and so the idea of art itself is kind of magical. Creating a magical space for your art can help you to feel more in-tune with your creations.
There are many, many ways you can add magical elements to your art process and half the fun is discovering what way best resonates with you!
- Moon Water
- Crystals
- Incense
- Meditation
- Sigils
- Enchantments
- Divination
Listed above are some ways you can incorporate magic into your artwork and the ones I’ll be focusing on in this blog post.
Moon Water
Using moon water in your artistic practice is maybe the most discreet way of adding magic to your art. Why is moon water good for art, you might ask. Well, different cycles of the moon hold different magical properties such as protection, psychic enhancement and creativity.
Moon water can be used to clean your tools and space. Cleaning your paintbrushes during use with a few added drops of moon water will give them a boost of creativity in your work. Moon water can be used to clean any sort of tool, exactor knives, needles, scissors, you name it and because moon water just looks like water, you can use this method virtually undetected.
You can also cleanse your workspace with moon water. Personally, I like to keep some in a little spray bottle so when I feel like my space needs a little boost of energy and creativity, I can just give it a spritz and get right to work.
You can also create invisible sigils with moon water. Just dip your finger or a toothpick in moon water and simply draw your sigils on a blank page or piece before your working, or after its completed. Focus on your intention of the sigil and just wait for it to dry.
Sigils
There are a few methods when it comes to creating sigils, but even the creating of a sigil can be artistic. It’s good to create your own sigils, since they will be specific to your own intentions. So, what is a sigil? A sigil is a symbol created with intention of a specific outcome. For example, if I were to create a sigil with an arrow pointing inward, I may have the specific intention to bring something to myself. Finding a style of creating intended sigils, or even just the creation of a sigil can be a fun warm up before your art working and works as both a magical boost and artistic exercise.
Incense
I love using incense when I’m working. Personally, I find incense to be the perfect way to create the atmosphere I want. I use cinnamon incense stick, to attract creativity to me, but there is a vast variety of incense with all kinds of correspondences. I would recommend researching the different kinds of incense and comparing their attributes to the kind of atmosphere you’re looking for while you work on your art. Incense can also be used to cleanse your space, opening it to the energies you want.
Meditation
Creating some time to sit down and meditate before you start to work is a great way to clear your mind and open yourself up to all kinds of creative energy; as well as give you potential inspiration. If you’re feeling an art block, I would recommend meditation to clear blockages and find inspiration. This method can be paired with incense for an enhanced effect.
Crystals
There are a lot of crystals to work with, and you guessed it, they all have their own correspondences. Using crystals to boost your workspace is one way to incorporate magic in your art, but you can also make art out of crystals. Some artists make crystal jewellery, add shards of crystals to resin work, and you can glue those bad boys on to whatever you’re working on. I recommend checking out the Crystal Bible to find out what crystals share a correspondence with what you’re trying to accomplish.
Enchantments
The tools we use to create art are special to us, as they are the mediums to our vision. That’s why, enchanting our art tools can have a huge impact on our creations. Performing enchantments on our tools will not only give you a magical boost but create a deeper relationship between you and the tools you use and by extension, your art.
Divination
If art block, or lack of inspiration is your issue, divination is a fun way to get those creative juices flowing and perhaps find the cause of your blockage. There are many divination methods from popular to obscure and each way may give you that spark you may be looking for. Tarot cards, for example, are popular, easily accessible and artistic all on their own. Images from the cards, as well as their divinatory meaning can help you along your artistic journey.
If mixing magic and art is a concept you resonate with, looking into these magical methods will be both fun and productive. Further information can be found online, through books and even on YouTube! I’ve linked a few resources below that I enjoy, but there are many, many more to explore.
